The Portlock Boot CD freezes at boot-up on VMware

Date published: August 27, 2009

Issue: The Portlock Boot CD freezes during initialization on VMware ESX / VMware ESXi / VMware Server virtual machines configured for Novell NetWare.

Resolution: Change the virtual machine operating system type to Windows before booting the Portlock Boot CD. Change the operating system type back to NetWare before booting NetWare.

Additional information: The Portlock Boot CD is based upon WinPE which is a Windows operating system. The hang occurs while WinPE is initializing the Windows operating system. For an unknown reason when the virtual machine operating system type is set to NetWare, virtual machines running Windows will lockup.

Warning: It is NOT recommend that you leave the virtual machine operating system set to a Windows platform as this is NOT a supported environment for NetWare and you will NOT be able to install the NetWare virtual machine additions.

Note: This issue has surfaced in recent versions of VMware ESX, VMware ESXi Server and VMware Server. This issue does not exist in VMware Workstation.
